When it’s time to get replacement windows, finding the right company to handle the project can become a part-time job. Because your home is your single largest investment, you wouldn’t want to trust remodeling it to just anyone.

Read on to ensure you’ll find the right balance between quality and cost of your replacement window installation.

1. Hiring a company that’s not licensed, bonded and insured

Before you start your replacement project, you’ll want to know if your jurisdiction requires a permit and confirm that the installer is properly licensed or registered to do the job. Be sure to ask the company if they are licensed, bonded and insured, and be sure to get clarity around what that means for you as a customer if something were to go wrong.

A licensed installer is required to pass an exam by the state. This ensures that the installer has the knowledge and financial stability to perform the work. Some companies might try to pass a business license for an installer’s license. However, a business license is a tax requirement and is not relevant to the company’s competence.  If you make the mistake of using a company without licensed installers, you may end up with a botched installation. A faulty installation of windows can cause higher energy bills, water damage, or negate manufacturer’s warranty.

Also, make sure the company has general liability and workers’ compensation insurance for your protection in the event of an accident. If a worker is on a ladder and falls and the company does not have insurance, the burden lies with the homeowner. Let the company know that a current insurance certificate should be shown to you before the job starts.

2. Hiring an Installation Company Without Research

Expect to spend a little time interviewing at least three installation companies.  Be sure to ask for a list of references from the company, but take your research a step further and check online for reviews.  Check the company’s social media accounts, website, Yelp, Angie’s List and similar sources for customer feedback.

Confirm how long the company has been in business, and see if there are any complaints with the Better Business Bureau. If a company has been in business for less than three years, you will need to really check their references. A company that has been in business for several years will be more knowledgeable and have stability to cover any warranty issues if they arise.

3. Choosing Low-Quality Windows

When installing replacement windows, it’s in your best interest to choose quality windows. Cost should be factored into the decision, but it should not be the only consideration. Opting for lower prices and lower quality now, will only mean having to replace your windows again later. Lower cost options like low-quality frames with single-pane glass will also drastically reduce the energy efficiency of a home. Double-pane glass at a minimum is recommended. However to get a better return on investment, features like Low-E coating and gas fill can ensure that you get the most performance out of your windows as far as thermal resistance and energy efficiency. High-quality replacement windows will last a long time, be relatively low maintenance and help you save on energy costs. The same cannot be said for low quality windows, which may need to be replaced again in 3-5 years.

When replacing your windows, make sure that you do not make these mistakes. Instead, choose the right company and the right windows. If you are in the market for quality replacement windows, click here to locate an Authorized NT Window Dealer.
