Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Windows

By May 15, 2026 Uncategorized

It’s that time of year – time to give your home a deep clean! While organizing closets, shampooing your carpet, and dusting all those little crevices is always a good step, windows are an essential but often ignored part of that process. Clean windows help maintain visibility and support the long-term appearance and upkeep of your windows. Plus, it’s pretty easy to do, and can be comfortably incorporated into your routine.

Supplies

You will want to have a sponge or soft cloth, a squeegee, and a microfiber cloth for the glass itself. For the tracks and frame, a soft brush can be an excellent way to get rid of excess dirt and debris.

Choosing the right cleaner is important to help protect your windows. Avoid oil-based or abrasive cleaners, as they may damage the glass or surrounding sealants. A simple vinegar-based solution or a mild soap and water mixture can be effective for general cleaning. Always test any cleaner in an inconspicuous area first and follow manufacturer recommendations for your specific product, and follow cleaning product instructions.

Pro Tip! While newspapers used to be a good way to get rid of streaking, due to the recent change in newspaper material they are more likely to damage your windows. Be sure that you avoid using newspapers if possible.

How-To

Try to clean your windows on a cloudy day if possible, as this will decrease the likelihood of streaking. Start indoors when cleaning your windows, as interior glass tends to be less dirty. Before cleaning the glass, use a soft brush or vacuum to remove dust and debris from the window frame, sill, and track areas, where buildup is most common. If using a vacuum, a brush attachment works best. If you don’t have a brush attachment for your vacuum, try using a paper towel roll!

For the glass, use a soft microfiber cloth and your chosen cleaner, applying it in an “S” motion to help minimize streaking. Use light pressure and avoid abrasive tools. Do not use razor blades or similar objects, as they can scratch the glass surface. For stubborn debris, allow the cleaner to loosen the buildup and gently wipe it away.

Lastly, take your squeegee and gently wick away the excess water from the window. This will give you the best chance of avoiding streaking. Give your window one last good dry with the microfiber cloth, and you’re all set!

If you have single-hung or double-hung windows, the bottom sash on many modern designs can tilt inward for easier cleaning. Some double-hung windows also allow the top sash to tilt in. However, this feature may not be available on older windows. Always follow your manufacturer’s instructions to safely operate and tilt the sash before cleaning.

Pro Tip! If you have stubborn debris, such as tree sap, avoid using abrasive tools. Instead, allow your cleaner to sit briefly to help loosen the buildup, then gently wipe it away. Always follow your manufacturer’s recommendations for approved cleaning methods and products.

Screens

Screens are an essential part of cleaning your window, as most debris and pollutants get stuck in the screens. Give them a dousing with warm water, and a gentle soap scrubbing with a brush. Unlike window glass, screens should be done on a sunny day, as this will help them dry quickly.

Maintenance Check

While you’re cleaning your windows, it’s a great time to do a little maintenance check. Be sure to check your window’s weatherstripping, finishes, caulking, hardware, and screws, and be sure that your window is operating smoothly. If your window need some lubricant, use a dry silicone spray as recommended, and follow your manufacturer’s guidance for proper maintenance.

Keep Your Windows Cleaner, Longer

If you want to keep your windows looking fresh, it pays to take some preventative measures. Try trimming foliage from around your windows. Come winter, if you do not open your windows, consider removing your screens so they do not accumulate pollutants, and reinstall them during your spring cleaning.
